Reading: Richard Scarry, What Do People Do All Day?, 4-6 (translated).
Listening: Ingo Siegner, Der kleine Drache Kokosnuss in der Steinzeit, 0:00-25:00.
Viewing: 101 Dalmatiner, "Der schnellste Hund der Welt" (10 min.), "Das große Knochenbuddeln" (10 min.), "Der Feuerwehrhaupthund" (10 min.), "Rolly als Versuchskaninchen" (10 min.); Hallo Benjamin TV, "Wenn es draußen kalt ist" (22:33), "Jeder macht Fehler" (26:56)
The 101 Dalmatians is not great TV, but I pushed it as an alternative (and in German) to an even more vacuous series J is obsessed with, the doggie films Air Buddies and sequels, which we are trying to get J to stop watching.
The Hallo Benjamin TV shows are great because they feature a lot of children speaking.
There seems to be only a rough script, so speech patterns are very natural & often there are several people talking at the same time. It's very close to a classroom environment. About a year ago J was watching 5-6 of the older episodes practically every day for several weeks. Now there are some new episodes and he's interested again.
When I walked into the living room during "Jeder macht Fehler" (everybody makes mistakes) J looked up and said to me very solemnly "Niemand ist fehlerlos" (nobody is flawless). Later he started telling me about a classmate who makes mistakes and does things against the rules and doesn't say she's sorry (sich entschuldigen). I asked if he said he was sorry when he makes mistakes. "Natürlich," he responded and rolled his eyes.
